What Is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on method that encourages the body’s natural healing mechanisms. The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and fluid that surround, protect, and nourish the brain and spinal cord. Treating this area relieves tension and stress from deep within the body to improve the patient’s overall wellness.

Craniosacral therapy utilizes soft touch, with the pressure being applied equivalent to about the weight of a nickel to release restrictions in the soft tissue surrounding the central nervous system. Craniosacral therapy is most commonly used to treat pain and dysfunction and to build up resistance to disease.

How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?

Craniosacral therapy begins with the patient lying down and fully-clothed. The medical professional will apply approximately five grams of pressure to your feet, head, or sacrum to monitor the rhythm of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid to detect potential restrictions and imbalances. If they detect a need, they will gently reposition you to normalize the flow of cerebrospinal fluids, correct imbalances, and dissipate the negative effects on your central nervous system.

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is most known to help with pain-relief and to treat dysfunctions. There are little to no side effects caused by craniosacral therapy, so it makes a great option for conditions like migraines, headaches, and central nervous system disorders, where the normal prescription medications or treatments may have unwanted side effects.

Craniosacral therapy works by encouraging your body to heal itself. It’s pain-free and many patients even experience deep relaxation or falling asleep while undergoing treatment.

The Functional Medicine Center of Fort Collins

At the Functional Medicine Center of Fort Collins, we provide craniosacral therapy to encourage your body’s own natural healing mechanisms to promote overall wellness. We utilize this therapy as a part of many of our patients’ personal wellness plans.

We believe in treating the body as one system, finding the source of your symptoms and understanding how they fit into your entire system is key to achieving a pain-free, happy, and healthy life.

Addressing only the symptoms without discovering the underlying cause will result in the symptoms presenting again and again. This is the reason that when many of our clients come to us they are ready to give up and feel as though they have exhausted every option. Many prescription medications mask your symptoms but do not treat the underlying causes. They also typically come with a list of unwanted side effects.

When you come to the Functional Medicine Center of Fort Collins, we begin with an assessment of your current health and collect information from you, such as any symptoms you’ve been suffering from and your wellness goals. This helps us to create a personalized wellness plan just for you. If you are ready to start working on your health and increase your overall wellness, schedule a consultation at the Functional Medicine Center of Fort Collins.
